Dorissa Smith

Dorissa Carol Smith, 80, of Margaretville passed away on July 25, 2012, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

Dorissa was born on October 23, 1931, daughter of Carroll and Evelyn VanBenschoten in Margaretville. A lifelong member of the Margaretville community, she attended Margaretville High School where she was a standout cheerleader. After high school, Dorissa briefly moved to Elizabeth, NJ to attend nursing school at Elizabeth General Hospital and returned to her home in the Catskills as a registered nurse.

Dorissa VanBenschoten and Thomas L. Smith Jr., were married January 16, 1954, and honeymooned during a car trip to Miami, FL. In addition to being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Dorissa worked for many years alongside Tom at the family business, Delaware Valley Oil Company in Margaretville, and maintained a comfortable home in Fleischmanns.

Dorissa was an extraordinary bowler, a member of the “600 Club” and anchor on many league teams throughout the years. She also looked forward to fun golf outings with her group of close friends, often referred to as “the girls.” An avid sports fan, Dorissa was always present to cheer on children and grandchildren at MCS Blue Devil events.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Smith of Margaretville; daughter, Carol and son-in-law Jim Cook of Atlanta, GA; son, Gary and daughter-in-law Toni Smith of Margaretville; grandchildren, Lindsey and Maxwell Mead of Stone Ridge, and Dr. Brent Smith of Boston, MA.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister and best friend, Delores Hubbell.

Dorissa’s family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers at Mountainside and especially to Gracie Munoz for their loving care and support that helped ease Dorissa through her battle with Alzheimer’s and the difficult final months.

Calling hours were held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2012, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
A funeral service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

A committal service was held and burial is in the Clovesville Cemetery, Fleischmanns.
