Donald G. Ballard, 78, of Margaretville and recently Robinson Terrace in Stamford, passed away Saturday, Jan. 31. 2009 at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born April 2, 1930 in Denver, NY, the son of Harris and Ruia (Avery) Ballard.
Don was the manager of the Adirondack Bat Factory in Arkville for 25 years. For a few years after the closing of the bat factory, Don worked in Construction for Elmer Close. He then went to work as the manager of the Shandaken Mill for the Charles D. Roberts Company, Shandaken, where he retired after 26 years. Don’s leisure time was spent cutting firewood and he especially enjoyed watching his son, Dan, and grandson, Beau, racing cars at Fonda Speedway.
Surviving are two sons, Jon and Deb Ballard, Stamford and Dan and Marilyn Ballard, Grand Gorge; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Bessie Jensen, Halcottsville.
He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Lillian and a brother Harold.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at the Bathgate Wing of Robinson Terrace for their kind care and compassion while Don was a resident there this last year.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Main Street, Roxbury, with Rev. Bert Moore officiating.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 7-9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
Burial will be at a later date in Vega Cemetery.
