Dec. 3, 2008: Do your part for our communities

To The Editor:
Kudos to Lauren Quarltere, Mike Mathis, Maggie Inge, Iris Mead and Margaretville Mayor Bill Stanton for their leadership in developing and organizing last Saturday’s parade. I know firsthand how many months of hard work and planning went into this kick-off event for the Holiday Treasure Express. To see our local businesses, organizations, towns and villages represented so vibrantly speaks to the spirit of our region.
Additional thanks to Event Coordinator Gretchen Balcom and the many volunteers who helped shape the day’s event by encouraging community buy in and participation. Most of all, the hundreds of people that lined Main Street, Margaretville and applauded these efforts should remember the impetus behind such a wonderful pageant of community enthusiasm.
The Holiday Treasure Express is designed to drive consumers to our local businesses during this holiday season. That being said, I strongly encourage everyone who enjoyed last Saturday’s festivities to make a conscientious effort to patronize our businesses and local communities.
Forget the mall and box stores, stay away from the Internet and get out into these communities where there is an abundance of gift choices coupled with a friendly and familiar face behind the counter. More than ever before, the time is now to do our part to keep our Main Streets the vital hub of our communities. Shop local!
