Communities set Memorial Day parade schedules

Memorial Day services to honor veterans of the Fleischmanns and Margaretville areas will be celebrated Monday, May 27 with American Legion Post 216 coordinating the activities.

There will be a parade and service in both Fleischmanns and Margaretville. The parade in Fleischmanns will form in front of the fire hall on Main Street at 8:45 a.m. with a start at 9 a.m. The parade will proceed to the Skene Memorial Library where there will be a wreath laying ceremony, the mayor will speak and the Margaretville Central School Band will perform.

In Margaretville the parade will line up at 10:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. start at Margaretville Central School. The parade will march up Main Street to the memorial in front of the American Legion Hall where the Margaretville Central School band will perform.

Refreshments in the Legion Hall will follow. In case of inclement weather, services will be held inside Margaretville Central School at 11 a.m.
In Grand Gorge the parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the Earl B. Dudley American Legion Post 686. The parade will wind its way down Main Street and end in the cemetery with a short ceremony.

In Roxbury, Memorial Day activities are being sponsored by Ralph S. Ives American Legion Post 1785. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. and travels down Main Street to the town square memorial. For information call Marty Finch at 607 326-7107.

In Andes the parade will start after the last bus goes through, around 10:30 a.m., and proceeds to Bohlmann Park for a memorial service. It then goes down to the cemetery, where the school band will play and two students will recite the “Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields.” A message from national American Legion headquarters will be read at the cemetery. In case of rain, the program will be at the school.

In Phoenicia the Memorial Day parade starts at 10 a.m. on Main Street and ends at “The Eagle” where a brief ceremony will be held. Following the parade all are welcome at the American Legion Post on Plank Road for free hot dogs, hamburgers, and sides.
