CMN wins awards in NY press contest

The Catskill Mountain News has won several awards in a number of categories in the New York Press Association’s (NYPA) annual Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were handed out last weekend at the NYPA’s spring convention that took place in Albany at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Sales manager Doris Warner and reporter Julia Green from the News’ staff attended the convention.
News Editor and Publisher Richard Sanford received second- and third-place awards for photography in the Sports Action and Spot News categories, respectively. Sanford’s photo of injured New York State Trooper Richard Mattson that ran in the May 2 issue of the News was the third-place Spot News Photo winner.
Additionally, the News won a first place award in the Spot News category for its coverage of the shooting of New York State Trooper David C. Brinkerhoff and the showdown that took place in Margaretville last April. First place plaques were awarded to Sanford and reporters Brian Sweeney and Julia Green.
The judges’ comments read, “Terrific job covering lots of parts of the community that this story affected. Very detailed stories that are strongly written. Kudos to the staff for getting a remake done on deadline and chasing the story hard for next publication.”
The News also received first place recognition in the Best Small Space Ad category for a “Pool Party” ad for Titan Drilling designed by Doris Warner, which judges called “very, very creative!” This is the second consecutive first-place Best Small Space Ad for the News.
The NYPA is the trade organization representing the weekly community newspapers of New York State. More than 350 newspapers throughout the state are NYPA members. In this year’s contest 170 papers submitted 3,455 entries in 60 categories.
