Charles Van Kirk Schafer, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008. He was cared for at home by his loving family and with the help of the Catskill Area Hospice.
He was born in Fairfield, N.J. on May 2, 1925. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during WWII in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star and was a member of the American Legion.
He married Joan Bidault on September 4, 1948 in Fairfield, NJ. He worked for Public Service Electric & Gas in Clifton, NJ for 29 years.
Charlie was an elder in the Reformed Church in Lincoln Park, NJ and also in the Margaretville-New Kingston Presbyterian Church.
He semi-retired over 30 years ago and moved to New Kingston in the Catskill Mountians. They both loved the Catskills.
Charlie enjoyed woodworking and made many items for his family. He made a hobby out of riding his lawn mower.
He was a gentle, kind man who will be missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan; his daughter, Linda Kelly and husband Larry; his son, Charlie Schafer and his wife Christa of New Kingston; a brother, Frederick Schafer and his wife Marylou of Greenwich, NY; Joan’s sisters, both of Margaretville, Ruth and husband Jack Wolcott and Betty and husband George; his grandchildren, Jenny Kratz, Beth Scullion, John Schafer and Michael Schafer; two great-granddaughters, Cadence and Harbor. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and loving friends.
He was predeceased by his mother, Maud A. Schafer and by his father, Frederick P. Schafer.
Services were held at the Presbyterian Church, New Kingston at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10 with Shirley A. Davis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.
Burial is at the New Kingston Cemetery, New Kingston.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
