Blue Devils golf up to par

The rebirth of competitive high school golf at Margaretville took hold four years ago. The MCS golf effort began as a club activity, evolved into a competitive high school sport, and elevated to the status as a Delaware League title contender.

Margaretville concluded the 2012 regular season with a 9-2 overall record. The Blue Devils finished 6-1 in DL play good for second place behind undefeated Windham.

Nine players are on the Margaretville roster. Six of the nine compete in matches. The top four scores of the six make up the team’s cumulative score in a match.

Mitch Hull holds the top slot for Margaretville with an average score just under 43. Kyle Short follows three strokes behind. Dillon Shaffer comes in at 47 and Eric Mathiesen at 48. James Warner and Matt VanValkenberg round out the top six in the low 50s.

“The rapid progress we’ve made is directly related to the generous support of the Meadows Golf Center and the Hanah Mountain Resort and Country Club,” emphasized Margaretville coach Jeremey Marks.

“The accessibility and quality of our practice and playing facilities is a huge motivator for our guys. The end result is a group of young people likely to include playing golf as a life-long recreational activity.”
