Anthony Calcasola, 93, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.
Anthony was born on August 18, 1920 in Enfield, CT to Calogero and Carmella (Marsala) Calcasola. He grew up in Thompsonville, CT and graduated from elementary school in 1937. He joined his brothers and began working in the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company mill until moving to Brooklyn in 1939.
He began work for E.A. Laboratories as a shoemaker where he worked for four years. Anthony then joined the Army in 1943 and served for three years including service in WWII with the 44th Division, 114th Infantry Regiment, Company “F” as a light machine gunner. He was the recipient of the EAME Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of PFC. He returned to work at his brother’s shop as a shoemaker for three years before beginning work for Cerro Wire as a machine operator where he worked until he retired in 1982 after 30 years.
Anthony married Mary Grace Dugan in 1944 in the Church of St. John the Baptist in Brooklyn. They were happily married for 69 years. Anthony was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville. He was a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus, L.I. Council #197, and a member of the American Legion Post 216 of Margaretville. He enjoyed NY Yankees baseball, stamp collecting, crossword puzzles and jazz.
He also served on the Board of Elections and volunteered at the library, was keeper of the keys and Guy Friday at Sacred Heart Church. Anthony often helped the Boy Scouts with their Christmas tree sales, as well.
Anthony was predeceased in death by his parents, Calogero and Carmella Calcasola; his wife, Mary Grace and brothers, Louis, Ignacio (Nat), Angelo, and Carmelo Calcasola.
He is survived by his daughter, Carmella (Bart) Basile of Roxbury and his grandchildren, Eric Sean and Karyn Janelle, (Aaron Rion); his great grandchildren, Sean Ryan and Robert William and his nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A visitation will be held at the Hynes Funeral Home, 48 Walnut Street, Margaretville from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014.
A Mass will be held at Sacred Hearth Church, Main Street, Margaretville at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
Burial will take place on Monday, May 19 at St. Charles Cemetery on Long Island.
