Longtime Margaretville resident Anneliese Marco, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, after a short illness.
She was born July 14, 1914, a native of Hamburg, Germany, and was looking forward to her 94th birthday.
Anneliese married Pascal Marco in Salzhausen, Germany on December 2, 1944 and both immigrated to the United States in 1947, settling in Astoria, Queens.
She liked to read and was also an excellent writer. She wrote about her experiences during the war years in Germany, in her native language, and had the story published in a German newspaper.
Anneliese was a founding member of the German-American Club of the Northern Catskills and participated in many of the club’s affairs as her age would allow. Though from north Germany she loved to dress in the traditional Bavarian “dirndls’ that are worn by the women from south Germany when they attend a festive affair. Her speaking of the German language was perfect to the last.
Surviving is a niece, Ingrid Richter and family, who reside in Hamburg, Germany and two sisters-in-law.
She was predeceased by her husband.
Burial was on Thursday, May 29, in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Astoria, next to her husband, where a simple graveside service was held.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.
Funeral arrangements were by E.B. Gormley Funeral Home in Phoenicia.
