4th annual Team Trivia Challenge tested knowledge and raised funds

The fifth Team Trivia Challenge occurred at The Roxbury Arts Group’s Hilt Kelly Hall on Saturday, May 1. The fund-raiser is held annually to benefit the restoration of the historic Fleischmanns United Methodist Church, also known as the Fleischmanns Community Church. Teams of two and four players competed to answer questions posed by Dr. Bill Birns, who saw to it that the evening was filled with unexpected bursts of merriment.
The $25 donation per player fee included the chance to participate and consume delectable desserts. Observers donated $10 each for the opportunity to laugh, heckle, and partake of the refreshments. Lovely door prizes were donated by businesses.
The event was begun several years ago when the former executive director of the MARK Project, Joan Lawrence-Bauer, realized that this was just the sort of event to be a consistently successful fund-raiser for the church. She arranged for Doug Grunther of radio WDST to come in and emcee the first Challenge; since then it has taken on a popular life of its own due in large part to the fine entertainment provided by Dr. Birns.
The always enjoyable evening ensures that previous teams form or re-form and return in eager anticipation of either defending their titles or in pursuit of higher ones. New teams are eagerly welcomed, and team-less individuals wishing to participate are placed on top-notch teams.
This year’s late event date meant that some team members were not available, some were at other events, and so the number of teams was at an all-time low, resulting in lower proceeds than hoped. However, it is anticipated that the construction on the ceiling of the church sanctuary can begin this summer.
Approximately $800 was raised for the restoration of the sanctuary of the Fleischmanns Community Church.
Further donations to the cause can be made by mailing a tax-deductible check made out to “FUMC” and mailing it to PO Box 84, Fleischmanns, NY 12430.
