34th Fleischmanns Tennis Tourney raises juvenile diabetes research money

The 34th annual Fleisch-manns Tennis Tournament will take place this Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27 at the village courts, which have been newly resurfaced this past week by Copeland Coating.
First round sets are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue through the semi-finals. The four final matches, men’s and women’s singles and men’s and mixed doubles will be concluded on Sunday, followed by the trophy and awards presentation, benefit auction and a buffet luncheon.
Family duos have always been a tournament tradition. Husband and wife Robert Moore and Vicky Quesada and Cliff and Lauren Chanler will be teammates in mixed doubles, as will reigning titlists, father and daughter Peter and Meredith Barcia. And “golden girls” Karen Goertzel and Agnes Freas are both paired with unknown partners, with whom they have had no team practice prior to the tournament.
The four Polish Musketeers, Walter Rogawski, Michael Celinski, Janusz Lasota and Henry Birman have made the commitment to participate, however the exact configuration of who will do what with whom remains undecided. Fifteen-year-old Dale Fet- terman from Roxbury, who had the misfortune of drawing top seed David Costello in the first round of men’s singles in 2007, is hoping for an opportunity to utilize his newly acquired skills in a less daunting elimination match.
Surprisingly, men’s doubles, usually the most riveting and hotly contested matches, have, to date only two teams registered. Ed Dalski, who will be playing with his friend and favorite partner, Harvey Stick, and the well-honed team of Paul Gorzula and Jacik Krzeminski, who would like to add to the assorted singles, doubles, first and second place trophies they have collected during the past 10 years.
The proceeds from the ninth benefit auction will be donated to Juvenile Diabetes Research. Auction items include gift certificates from the Flower Shop, Maine Black Bear, The Market Basket, Adams, La Duchesse Anne, Al’s Restaurant, The Cornerstone Health and Fitness, Ollallieberry, a stunning black leather travel tennis bag from Key Bank and gold custom-designed jewelry from Walter Rogawski.
