Local students earn Alfred honors

Alfred — Three local students have been named to the Dean’s List at Alfred State College for the spring 2009 semester.


Carpenter named to honor society

Phi Sigma Theta is proud to announce that Chris Carpenter, son of Mary Colfer and Roy Carpenter of Margaretville, has recently become a member of Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society at the University of South Florida.


Graduate valedictorian gives speech at Madison Square Garden

Andes resident Eloise Harris Damone gave a moving speech on June 11 to Touro College’s graduating class at Madison Square Garden.


MCS grad completes training

Robert (Bob) Merritt, a former resident of New Kingston and Margaretville, has graduated from the U.S. Navy Great Lakes Recruit Training Center and is currently attending school for Master at Arms (security and law enforcement) training school in San Antonio, Texas.


Local students among top spelling bee finishers

Two students from Stamford Central School placed first at the Delaware and Otsego County Arts and Cultural Final Spelling Bee on Saturday at The Roxbury Arts Group.


Kory Ancona earned symposium invite

Margaretville Central School senior Kory Ancona became the first MCS student to participate in the 24th annual Upstate New York Junior Science and Humanities Research Symposium in Albany on March 30 and 31. The annual event brings together some of the best and brightest young minds from around the state; over 400 students from more than 40 schools between Westchester County and Western New York presented original scientific research at the symposium.


RCS students fared well at Olympiad

Close to 300 junior high schools started competition last fall with only the top 38 in the state qualifying for the state finals held last weekend at SUNY at New Paltz. Roxbury finished a respectable 26th including four of the 25 events in the top 10.


Barrett named to Dean's List

Adam Barrett, son of Thomas and Anne Barrett of Andes, has been placed on the Dean’s List for the Fall semester at Adirondack Community College in Queensbury.
Adam, who earned a grade point average of 3.2 or better, is enrolled in the adventure sports and leadership training program.
