RCS wins two; Devils defeat Jayhawks

Roxbury battled from behind Monday to overtake Davenport and win a 7-5 decision on the road. After falling behind by four runs after two innings, the Rockets stormed from behind, tying the game in the top of the sixth and scoring three times in their final at bat to nail down the victory.
Sophomore Nick Hamil started the game for Roxbury but ran into some trouble in the early going. Davenport scored a pair of runs in both the first and second frames to build a 4-0 lead after two innings.


RCS coaches looking for growth in softball and baseball

Slowly, patiently, one step at a time, Roxbury coach Greg Funck has built a baseball foundation. Funck’s emphasis on fundamentals, his focus on knowing and executing the game, and his enthusiasm and love for baseball, has positioned Roxbury to make some noise in the Delaware League this spring.


Blue Devils hope to repeat diamond success

In recent years, spring in the Catskills has meant fast running sap, great trout fishing, the sweet smell of blossoming lilacs, and softball and baseball success on the Margaretville outdoor diamonds.

The Margaretville softball and baseball teams open their 2011 seasons buoyant and ready to go to work trying to extend their recent championship successes. The Blue Devils’ softball team is looking to lengthen their three-year hold on the Delaware League’s Mountain Division championship.

Coleman ends SK dream season

Too big. Too fast. Too strong. That’s the no-fail formula Coleman Catholic used to roll past South Kortright in the semi-finals of Saturday’s New York State Class D, Girls’ Basketball Final Four at the McDonough Sports Complex on the Hudson Valley Community College campus in Troy.
In Coleman Catholic, SK ran head first into a high school girls’ basketball machine. Coleman has everything; speed, exceptional guard play, strong inside power, and a genuine star in junior Makenzie Burud.

It was hair-raising. It was nail biting. It was gut-wrenching. Until Robin Ward hit two foul shots with 0.9 seconds left in Saturday’s New York State Class D, Girls’ Regional Championship game at SUNY Oneonta, no more than three points ever separated the South Kortright Rams and Hamilton Emerald Knights basketball teams.

Ward’s foul shot locked down a 32-27 SK victory propelling the Rams to the Final Four for the second time in the past three years.


SK girls earn sectional crown; boys fall in semi-finals

The wild Jefferson upset win over SK in the boys’ bracket almost overshadowed the dominating play of SK’s other basketball team, the Lady Rams.

The South Kortright girls used a stifling defense to overwhelm Gilbertsville Mount-Upton in the semifinals Tuesday night, then rolled over Schenevus at the Arena on Saturday to win their second Section IV title in the past three years.


Indoor tourney in Margaretville

Margaretville — The Margaretville Central School Booster Club will host their eighth annual indoor soccer tournament at the school on Friday evening, March 11 and all day Saturday, March 12. The tournament will include 40 teams divided into four age groups.


Margaretville's Williams advances to Regionals

Margaretville Central School ski racer Ian Williams placed 11th in slalom and 19th in giant slalom in the New York State High School Alpine Ski Races held at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid on March 1 and 2.

Williams’ two top-20 finishes, along with his season’s ranking, have earned him a place in Eastern Regional competition this weekend at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire. Ian leaves for New Hampshire Friday for training.


SK boys and girls cruise in sectional play

Trevor Holdridge is pure basketball energy. Holdridge doesn’t excel at any one part of the game but is the definition of a well-rounded basketball player. Holdridge had his versatile all-around game on full display on Saturday during the boys’ Class D semi-final contest in South Kortright as the top-seeded Rams overwhelmed Stamford, 47-18.
