Obituaries

Doris Elizabeth Finch, 91, of Milford, was the eldest of five children born to Elicuim and Elizabeth Finch on September 21, 1921.

Doris attended Roxbury school, and when WWII began she went to work at a defense plant where she operated a huge lathe making bolts. 

Doris married Ray Charles Tully and had a son, Reggie. Ray died of a heart attack when Reggie was only two years old and making Doris a widow for 17 years.

Kenneth Alton Hoyt, 71, of Grand Gorge died on Nov­­ember 2, 2012 at Fox Hospital in Oneonta after a long and courageous battle with COPD.

He was born February 6, 1941 in the Town of Canajoharie, the son of Elmer and Mabel (Tansey) Hoyt.
Ken was a dairy farmer most of his life until his illness forced him to retire. He was a big fan of the Cleveland Browns football team and the Dodgers and White Sox baseball teams. He was a big fan of NASCAR and he loved to watch the ponies at the Saratoga Race Track.

William Cornelius Reynolds, 92, passed away on October 21, 2012 at his home in Tewksbury, MA surrounded by his family. 

Bill was born in Roxbury on September 3, 1920, the son of William E. Reynolds and Mabel (Brown) Reynolds. 

He graduated from Roxbury Central School and served in the United States Army during WWII as a Sergeant of the Quartermaster Automotive Mechanic Division in Burma, India from 1943 to 1945.  He was employed with GAF (General Aniline and Film) Corporation in Linden, NJ as a Valve and Instrument Technician from 1946 to 1982.

Joseph Wranovics, 80, of Bragg Hollow, Halcottsville passed away on October 25, 2012 in Kremmling, Colorado while on his annual fall hunting trip.

He was born March 4, 1932 in Dry Brook and was a life-long resident of this area.

Joe was a farmer most of his life and new what hard work was. He enjoyed hunting, both locally, and in Kremmling, Colorado where he traveled each fall to hunt mule deer and elk.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vera; a son, Lindy; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two sisters and two brothers.

Nancy Borgese Sargent passed away Saturday October 20, 2012.

She was born in Queens, New York on April 17, 1926 to Joseph and Josephine Borgese. Nancy attended Forrest Hills High School then went on to Drew University where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree and Columbia University where she received her Masters of Arts and Science.

She married Reverend Russell Edwin Sargent on March 25, 1945. They embarked upon a lifelong career as missionaries and served the United Methodist Church in Chile, Costa Rica and Mexico.

John  William Gurnell Sr., age 76 formerly of the Margaretville area, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012
At the Simon Kramer Institute, New Philadelphia, PA.

He was born Feb. 11, 1936 at Brooklyn, NY, the son of George and Florence (Smith) Gurnell.
John married AnnMarie  Ingrassia on April 12 , 1961 at Hauppauge, New York. He moved to Arkville from Bayshore in 1981.While living in this area he drove school bus for the Margaretville Central  School. John attended the Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville .

Martha Rachel Mead, 65, of Kelly Corners passed away early Sunday morning, October 14, 2012. Martha battled lung cancer valiantly for a year with the aid of her immediate family. She was the backbone of her family and was a moral beacon to her family.

Martha was born June 28, 1947 in Yonkers to Carmen Anthony and Gertrude Rachel Prior (Pilkington). She lived in Yonkers with her brother Vincent Prior, plus an extensive extended family nearby, until around the age of 12 when the family moved to Dry Brook to live permanently in the peaceful, beauty and safety of the Catskill Mountains.

Dawn Marie Melvin, 27, of Andes died October 7, 2012 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Dawn was born on June 7, 1985 in Walton to Bruce and Tammy (Weaver) Melvin.

She had worked at the Andes Hotel, the Margaretville Motel, and the Regis Hotel in Fleischmanns. Since the birth of her son, she has been a stay-at-home mom, which she truly enjoyed.
She graduated from Andes Central School in 2003.

Dawn enjoyed deer hunting, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and she loved music.

Alonzo “Lonnie” Gale of Waterwork Road, Phoenicia died Wednesday Oct. 10, 2012 at the Benedictine Hospital. 

Lonnie, as he was known to all, was born in Tannersville on January 22, 1927 son of the late Lemuel Chichester Gale and Hazel Wright Gale.  He was a graduate of Hunter-Tannersville High School, and he then joined the Merchant Marines, where he was stationed in Alaska.  In 1945 he was aboard the Sueja III (Q137US), a supply ship in World War II.  Upon returning home, Lonnie married Ruth (Peggy) Every and they raised their family in Phoenicia.

Arlene Tweedie, 83, a resident of Arkville, died Wednesday Oct. 10, 2012 at her home.
She was born November 7, 1928 in Hobart, the daughter of Gidion and Florence (Cronk) Wickham.
Arlene was married to James W. Tweedie. He died on September 17, 1988.

She was a person who enjoyed bowling and her great-grandchildren.
Arlene is survived by a son, Daniel Reed; brothers, Richard and Larry Hitchcock, and a sister Glenda. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Tina and sons, Timothy Tweedie and Charles Reed.
