Huge bear killed after slamming into car

A black bear weighing nearly 600 pounds was killed Thursday night after it ran into a car on Route 30, just south of Grand Gorge. Tom Faraci, athletic director at Roxbury Central School, was heading home to Grand Gorge around 9 p.m. in a mix of rain and snow when the bear charged from the west side of the road and crashed into his car.


Farewell reception for Scudders at library

Roxbury — The Roxbury Library Association will host a farewell reception for Barbara and David Scudder, on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. The Scudders will be relocating from Roxbury to a retirement community in Goshen, Ind., on Nov. 5.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone in the Town of Shandaken that the political atmosphere is hostile. Long known as the wild west of the Catskills, this community has a history of tumultuous election campaigns and volatile government sessions.


Middletown Dems host reception for board candidates on Sunday

The public is invited to a reception for Town of Middletown Democratic candidates for town board, Michael Finberg and John Bernhardt, on Sunday, Oct. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Margaretville Bowl. Mr. Finberg has served 12 years on the board. He is a former schoolteacher and currently operates the Margaretville Bowl, Reliable Tent Rental and the Crossroads Building in Arkville.
Mr. Bernhardt, who retired this summer as superintendent of Andes Central School, is running for town office for the first time. He has more than 34 years experience as a teacher and school administrator.


Syracuse University graduate added to area law firm's staff

Stamford — Michael A. Jacobs of the law firm of Jacobs & Jacobs, Esqs. has announced the addition of attorney Andrew Stammel to the firm’s legal staff.
Attorney Stammel is a 2008 graduate of Syracuse University, where he graduated with honors and received the Dean’s Scholarship, Joseph Brecher Scholarship, and the Family Law and Social Policy Certificate.


Onteora Teachers' Association, district reach agreement for new contract

After working into the early hours of Tuesday morning, the negotiating teams for the Onteora School District and the Onteora Teachers’ Association reached agreement over details for a new contract.
“We have a settlement and a contract with the teachers,” said District Superintendent Dr. Leslie Ford.
The agreement was reached against the backdrop of a strike threat issued by the union, which planned to take a strike vote Tuesday.


Fleischmanns Comprehensive Plan is focus of Oct. 22 meeting

Fleischmanns — The Village of Fleischmanns Comprehensive Plan Committee is seeking public input on Fleischmanns’ draft Comprehensive Plan. The public hearing on Oct. 22 will include a brief presentation on what a Comprehensive Plan is and highlight some of the key recommendations contained within the draft Comprehensive Plan.


Halloween fun at Frost Valley

Claryville — Halloween Theme Weekends will be held at Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville on three weekends - Friday-Sunday, Oct. 16-18, Oct. 23-25 and Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
In addition, A Community Halloween Evening will be held on Friday, Oct. 30 at Frost Valley, starting at 7 p.m.


Last Tanglefoot concert Oct. 24 at RAG

Roxbury — Tanglefoot, the tumultuous band from Canada, a perennial favorite at The Roxbury Arts Group will play its last U.S. concert at RAG on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, $12 for seniors. Reservations are essential, call 607 326-7908.


10th annual GAC Oktoberfest Saturday at Belleayre Mountain

The German-American Club of the Northern Catskills will hold its 10th Annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center’s Discovery Lodge.
Music by the Schwarzenegger Connection and Bavarian folk dancers will set the tone at the event, which will feature vendors selling a variety of German crafts, including wood carvings, amber jewelry, beer steins, and clothing. German refreshments, including imported German beer, homemade cakes, German specialty cakes, bratwurst, soups, and other German classics will also be available.
