The enticing aroma of cake filled the hallways of Roxbury Central School last Wednesday. The school held its fifth annual Family Cake Decorating Contest as part of a month-long For the Love of Books reading celebration for the K-12 community.

The times, they are a-changin’. Or, more to the point: the times, they are a-changin’ hands.
Roxbury resident Dan Underwood, who has been the primary caretaker of the clock tower in the Roxbury Methodist Church for the past 20 years, is handing over the reins. Taking over will be Roxbury Historian Anthony Liberatore, who has been taking care of the clock under Underwood’s tutelage.

When life deals you lemons, you make lemonade. So what do you do when Mother Nature dumps four feet of snow in your front yard on Main Street in Roxbury? If you’re Frank Jankowski, Debbie Bauer and Frank’s seven-year-old daughter Catherine, you take that four feet of snow and make it into a 16-foot-tall snowman, that’s what!

Summer’s not here quite yet, but taste buds in Roxbury have nearly been fooled in recent weeks, thanks to a new take-out barbeque establishment: Cha Cha Hut BBQ.
“We wanted to open something in Roxbury because this is where we live and this is the community we want to support,” said co-owner Cherie Davis, who runs the business with her husband, Frank. “We opened a barbeque establishment because we love it, and it’s something that everybody seems to like, and we wanted to share that.”

Margaretville Central School announced last week that it received a $4,000 matching grant from The A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation to implement an early childhood literacy program called The 1,000 Books Program in cooperation with Fairview Public Library in Margaretville and Skene Memorial Library in Fleischmanns. According to MCS Head Librarian Pat Moore, the hope is to have the program up and running this spring.

The Wellness Committee of the Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Auxiliary encourages entire community to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease by participating in Wear Red Day on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Roxbury — Bonnie Walker, chair of the Roxbury Community Christmas Project, reported 49 families and 33 senior citizens in the Roxbury area received boxes from the project this year. Items included in the family boxes were a turkey, potatoes, fresh fruits and vegetables, stuffing, gravy, brownie mix, and an assortment of homemade cookies and breads.

MCS Trimming Superintendent List—A dozen local residents joined Margaretville Central School Board of Education members Monday evening to meet the first of three finalists being considered for the vacant superintendent’s post. Monday night they met Dr. Richard Hooley. Ms. Marcia Lamkin was scheduled for Tuesday night and Dr. John Gibson for Wednesday.

The Auxiliary of Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center held its Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Dec. 10 at the Purcell Parish Center in Margaretville. The event also marked the last official duties for Sue Adams of Arkville, who has served as auxiliary president for two years. Margaretville resident Peter Molnar will take over as president on Jan. 1.
