Monday night’s Roxbury Town Board meeting at the Grand Gorge Civic Center tackled an array of subjects, including reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for flood repairs, economic revitalization efforts, water district repairs, and community events.

Highway Superintendent Steve Schuman. Board member Allen Hinkley was absent.

Roxbury — The Greater Roxbury Learning Initiative Corporation (GRLIC) will make a formal donation of $250,000 for the creation of a media and technology center at Roxbury Central School (RCS) on April 11 during the regular board of education meeting beginning at 7 p.m. This donation will cover all of the expense associated with the project and will not require the use of taxpayer dollars.

Roxbury — Roxbury Central School District is one of 112 school districts and Board of Cooperative Educational Services in the state to receive the “2012 School Safety Excellence Award” from the Utica National Insurance Group. Roxbury received a “Titanium with Honors” designation, the highest-level award given.

Utica National officials presented the award at its 32nd annual school safety seminar, one of seven held in the state.

Roxbury — Over 11,000 Science Olympiad students from more than 400 New York State school districts began a six-month quest last fall towards the state finals. Only the best 54 survived the winter regional tournaments to participate in the “states” held at Canisius College in Buffalo last weekend.

For three seasons Roxbury baseball coach Greg Funck has watched his squad evolve. Hard work, a focus on fundamentals, and a healthy dose of patience are all a part of a baseball transformation that Funck believes should result in a Delaware League championship for his team this year.

“We’re setting the bar high this season,” Funck explained when previewing his team. “We want the league. We have a team that can compete with anyone on the baseball field this spring.”

When it comes to encouraging students to read, many parents feel that Roxbury Central School’s program takes the cake.

They mean that, both literally and figuratively. As part of a month-long reading celebration the school held its seventh annual Family Cake Decorating Contest last Wednesday night. It was attended by more than 100 people and it helped to raise about $700 for the reading program known as For the Love of Books or FLOB.                    

Orange City, Iowa — Jon Dykstra, a student at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, is a member of the Symphonic Band this semester.

The Symphonic Band will tour in Mitchell and Sioux Falls, S.D., March 30 to April 1, performing full or partial concerts in six venues. For concert times and details, visit www.nwciowa.edu/band-tour.

Roxbury — The Roxbury Arts Group invites the public to attend an evening that jointly meshes art with song, transcending the viewer to a level of “six-senses perfection” on Saturday, March 24 starting with a 6 p.m. art exhibit opening and reception featuring the work of digital collage artist, Gwen Adler and collaborators on canvas and in song, Natalia Zukerman and Adrianne Gonzalez.

St. Patty’s Day got rechristened St. Platty’s Day at Plattekill Mountain on Saturday. More than 20 kegs of green beer were served on the deck, and green t-shirts celebrated the new holiday. Kids painted shamrocks on their cheeks, others wore green braids and shamrocks dangled from helmets. The temperature hit the 60s and skiers peeled down to shorts. Some men even skied shirtless. The party though was bittersweet for many as they mourned the end of the ski season, cut short this year by a warm winter with little snow.

Roxbury — Roxbury Town Historian Anthony Liberatore is asking the public for help in compiling a Town of Roxbury history book that he hopes will be published through the “Images of America” series.
Liberatore is asking Roxbury residents to loan him old photos or postcards of locations in Roxbury that he can copy/scan for inclusion in the book.
