Greene ski areas blast Belleayre

Two private sector ski areas in the region are once again leveling charges of unfair ticket promotions against state-owned Belleayre Mountain Ski Center.

Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain, both located in Greene County, and who vie for the same skiers that Belleayre does, researched Belleayre’s records and discovered that for the past two ski seasons Belleayre has given away about 10 percent of its lift tickets for free.
Out of 169,000 skiers last season 16,000 were given free tickets. The season prior 16,700 got free tickets.


Jimmy DiGiacomo Auction a hit as Christmas Project fund-raiser

A festive crowd of nearly 70 hearty souls braved the cold and wind Sunday evening to attend the annual Jimmy DiGiacomo Auction and Dinner Dance at the La Cabana Restaurant in Fleischmanns.  
Proceeds from the auction benefit the Community Christmas Project, a grass-roots organization that provides food, clothing and holiday cheer to those in need throughout the Town of Middletown.Jennifer Slauson and Dorothy MaffeiJennifer Slauson and Dorothy MaffeiFor many years the Community Christmas Project has brought comfort and cheer to families and senior citizens in Middletown.  It is their goal that not one child in the area goes without warm mittens, brightly wrapped toys and a complete turkey dinner at Christmas.  Volunteers work year-round to raise money, purchase gifts and food, wrap and deliver the items, and seek out the people to whom these items will be distributed.


Support welcome for Christmas Project

Margaretville — The Community Christmas Project, which serves families and individuals in the Margaretville area, is again asking for support in helping your friends and neighbors this holiday season. The project, founded by area women nearly 50 years ago, served 142 families last year (252 adults and 217 children).


Middletown budget has 2.6% tax hike

The Town of Middletown has adopted a 2011 budget that reflects a 2.6 percent increase in the amount to be raised by taxes. The Tentative Budget included a tax increase of 8.4 percent, but the board made several large cuts that reduced that total by nearly six percent.


Jimmy DiGiacomo Auction benefits Christmas Project

Fleischmanns — Plans are underway to make this year’s Jimmy DiGiacomo Auction to benefit the Community Christmas Project a fun evening for everyone. The event will be held Sunday, Dec. 5, beginning at 5 p.m. and includes both live and silent auctions and dinner and dancing at LaCabana Restaurant in Fleischmanns.


Middletown Comprehensive Plan receives public input

Community members offered a handful of comments on the draft Town of Middletown Comprehensive Plan at an October 26 public hearing. Approximately 30 people attended the hearing, with about a dozen audience members offering input to town board members.

Free Thanksgiving dinner offered at Purcell Center

Margaretville — A free Thanksgiving dinner for the greater Margaretville community will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Purcell Center, 61 Academy Street in Margaretville. This free community dinner is open to everyone.


Middletown Comp plan meeting on Oct. 26

A public hearing on the draft Town of Middletown Comprehensive Plan will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at the town hall on Route 28, Margaretville. The Comprehensive Plan has been the subject of numerous public hearings and workshop sessions involving town and county planning officials. The plan was developed by Nan Stolzenburg, a consultant with Planning Better Places.


Campaigns of the past are focus of program

Fleischmanns — The Historical Society of the Town of Middletown (HSM) will offer a musical journey through spirited election campaigns of the past when it gathers for its Annual Meeting Saturday, Oct. 23 at LaCabana Restaurant in Fleischmanns.
