Bnai Israel celebrates anniversary Sunday

Congregation Bnai Israel in Fleischmanns will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. with a program of song, videos, inspirational messages and special refreshments. “Positively Israel” is the title of a presentation by Ronnie Gold, a former national officer of Na’amat, Pioneer Women, who lived in the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem with her husband from 1980 to the mid-90s. Mrs. Gold, a member of the congregation, is a Woodstock artist.

Tennis auction raised funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research

The 34th annual Fleischmanns Tennis Tournament’s rescheduled benefit auction took place on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Garden Room at Belleayre Mountain. At the helm for the ninth year, auctioneer Bob Novak’s wry humor and playful prodding elicited generous bids from a gathering of more than 40 friends and supporters. Following the auction, guests enjoyed a midafternoon buffet and a social hour in the sun on the Bluestone Patio.

Rain dampens Fleischmanns Tennis Tournament play

The rain-postponed finals matches of the 34th Annual Fleischmanns Tennis Tournament got underway at 10 a.m. Sunday. It was the first time in its three plus-decade history that the tournament could not be concluded as scheduled. The six remaining finalists, out of the original field of 46 registrants, prepared to take their turns at center court, to resolve the men’s doubles match that had been halted in the crucial third set, and to vie for the coveted men’s and women’s singles titles.

Property owner files lawsuit over Fleischmanns water tower

Following months of battling a proposed 360,000 gallon, 50-foot-tall water tower next door to her home, a Flieschmanns woman and her husband have filed a lawsuit against the village and the Town of Middletown to stop it. Co-plaintiff Anita Rubin, who lives on Paradise Camp Road, directed press inquiries to her attorney on Tuesday.
The village has been mulling the water tower plan for over two years, working with Delaware Engineering, the firm that built the village’s sewer system.

Rain puts damper on Fleischmanns Tennis Tournament

The 34th annual Fleisch-manns Tennis Tournament, which took place last weekend, could not be concluded on Sunday as scheduled, when an unexpected thunderstorm at noon inundated the courts with more than an inch of water.

34th Fleischmanns Tennis Tourney raises juvenile diabetes research money

The 34th annual Fleisch-manns Tennis Tournament will take place this Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27 at the village courts, which have been newly resurfaced this past week by Copeland Coating.
First round sets are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue through the semi-finals. The four final matches, men’s and women’s singles and men’s and mixed doubles will be concluded on Sunday, followed by the trophy and awards presentation, benefit auction and a buffet luncheon.

Junkyard owner pleads not guilty in fraud case

A Fleischmanns resident pleaded not guilty in Delaware County Court to five charges stemming from an alleged insurance fraud case.
William Hrazanek, 61, appeared before Delaware County Judge Carl W. Becker and entered not guilty pleas on one count of insurance fraud (a second-degree Class C felony) and four counts of offering a false instrument for filing (first-degree Class E felonies).

Catskills author signs books Saturday at Skene

Skene Memorial Library and The Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories host a brief book talk and signing by Catskills author John Ham. His new book, One Hundred Years on ‘Resort Ridge;’ The Legendary Mountain Hotels of the Northern Catskills, has just been published.

Valk honored with Rotary award for 54 years

Fleischmanns resident Milt Valk was honored with an award celebrating his 54 years of service to the Fleischmanns-Pine Hill Rotary Club last Wednesday during a dinner at the Pine Hill Arms Restaurant.
District governor Dave Reynolds was in attendance, as well as Lana Rouff, who takes over as district governor this week.

Congregation Bnai Israel celebrates 90th year

Congregation Bnai Israel in Fleischmanns celebrates its 90th year with Sabbath services led by Rabbi Moshe Pomerantz, and Hebrew classes for intermediate and beginning students conducted by both Rabbi Moshe and Kay Pomerantz. A special musical program is planned to culminate the celebration at summer’s end.
